Overview of Dr. Del’s Story
Growing up in rural Indiana after WWII, 8-year-old Craig Hane’s (Dr. Del’s) life was shaped by his Sunday School teacher, Mr. Theron York, who instilled in him the powerful belief that “What you believe will determine what actually happens to you.” This conviction, coupled with his Uncle Jack’s homeschooling in arithmetic and practical geometry, fostered in Craig a love for math and a vision of its potential for success. Despite early struggles with algebra and a counselor’s discouraging words, Craig’s belief in math was rekindled by inspiring teachers like Miss MaDonna O’Hair and Dr. Clint Gass, who championed his enrollment in a sophomore-level college algebra course at DePauw University, where he excelled.
This early triumph propelled Craig to Oberlin College, where he majored in math, tutored students, and taught high school math. After earning his Ph.D. in Algebraic Number Theory, Craig realized the theoretical world of academia was becoming boring. He transitioned into various business ventures, always applying his mathematical acumen. His lifelong goal, sparked by his early experiences, became improving math education in the USA, especially with the advent of modern tools like the scientific calculator and Wolfram Alpha. Craig firmly believes that “BELIEF is everything!” and that modern technology has made practical math accessible to virtually everyone, opening doors to technical careers and a brighter future for humanity.
